WHY MONTESSORI
Montessori education is an educational approach developed by Italian physician and educator Dr. Maria Montessori and characterized by an emphasis on independence, freedom within limits, and respect for a child’s natural psychological, physical, and social development. It succeeds because it draws its principles from the natural development of the child.
FLEXIBILITY & PREPARED ENVIRONMENTS
The inherent flexibility allows the method to adapt to the needs of the individual, regardless of the level of ability, learning style or social maturity. She believed the needs, talents, gifts, and special individuality of each child were important as a guide. Using this approach she created “prepared environments” for multi-age groups (0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12, and 12-14). The environments contain specifically designed materials for development that invite children to engage in learning activities of their own choice. Under the guidance of a trained teacher, children in a Montessori classroom learn by making discoveries with the materials, cultivating concentration, motivation, self-discipline, and a love of learning.
HANDS ON APPROACH
Montessori is a hands-on approach to learning that encompasses the use of the five senses, kinetic movement, spatial refinement, and small and large motor skill coordination. With this concrete knowledge, children find their own way to an understanding of concepts. This is combined with a deep love and need for purposeful work
SELF RELIANCE
The Montessori method emphasizes self-reliance and independence, in the classroom and at home, by teaching children the skills to do as much for themselves as they are capable of. The trained teacher (guide) is an artful organizer of experiences for the child to discover, process and practice. Constant and ongoing observation by the guide is one of the foundations of the Montessori program.
5 MAIN AREAS OF FOCUS
- PRACTICAL LIFE: Some life skills focus on pouring, buttoning, shoe tying and other activities that develop coordination and developing motor skills
- SENSORIAL: Helping children develop, explore and understand their sense of taste, smell, sight, touch, and hearing.
- MATHEMATICS: Some math skills consist of using concrete forms to learn things, including beads and boards
- LANGUAGE: Helping children basic writing and reading like rhyming and letters, developing hand strength, sand paper letter tracing.
- GEOGRAPHY: Exposing the child to basics in geography, racial groups, history, and life sciences. Music, art, and movement education are part of the integrated cultural curriculum”
OUR CLASSES
ORANGE CLASS: INFANT AND TODDLER
Currently we are enrolling infants 3 months to 24 months. We use infant-toddler Montessori materials to stimulate the young minds. Our dedicated loving and caring staff work diligently to provide for the different needs of each infant/toddler.
Each child has an individualized plan and will receive a detailed daily written reports about his/her activities during the day. We have a lesson plan, weekly themes, and a daily schedule for the class. Daily needs for the infants will differ and we do our best to take care of their needs. Teachers will do arts and crafts, singing, story time, and outdoor/indoor play with the kids to keep them busy throughout the day.
BLUE CLASS: PRESCHOOL AGE
- This is a very important class. As infants progress into this class, they learn and work in a more structured environment. A child may stay in this class until he or she is fully potty trained and able to work on his own and follow directions
- This classroom is slower paced and provides a child centered learning experience. The child has the ability to make his or her on choices and the teacher as the director gently guides the child to activities as per the lesson plan.
- The teacher –child ratio is lower
- This program offers very young children self-development in a tender atmosphere of special understanding, respect and support.
- Montessori Sensorial Activities respond to child’s urge to use all his senses, to explore around him.
- This program also appropriately accommodates the very young child’s sensitive period for language by offering creative and intriguing concepts to expand their growing vocabularies by joining conversations, listening to stories, classifying objects, and learning songs and poems. All nurture their budding language skills.
- Many Practical Life Exercises in this program will assist the self-help skills that lead to independence.
- This is the age of very strong imitation and the teachers constantly model appropriate social skills, good manners and consideration of others.
- Children will use simple Montessori material to learn, math, language, geography, science and social science at their own pace
- Arts and crafts, music and movement and dance classes help to improve the aesthetic values
- Educational and fun field trips will be included in the program as part of their hands on learning
- This program gives a solid basic foundation for a very young child towards the academic success later in life
GREEN CLASS: PRESCHOOL AGE
This age group ideally requires a 5 day repetitive work schedule to best help them prepare for Elementary School. Children in this age group that attend school 5 days a week have shown faster growth in all areas of classroom work as well as significantly better social skills essential for success in work and life. Children thrive on routine and consistency.
Children love exploring, discovering, experiencing their environment. Doing this takes time. We live in such a fast paced world that we want results and mastery immediately in a certain time frame. Children do not function like that. They need time to develop, time spent to unfold and become who they are meant to be. The Montessori environment offers quality, purposeful environment for children to engage in. Each day they are presented lessons that are age appropriate. We see children spend pockets of time in certain areas, repeating works and activities that they are enjoying
Being in the classroom for five days, provides consistency and an opportunity to choose many interesting work. It allows the natural pace of a child’s learning to happen. Longer times spent in a Montessori environment helps develop a strong focus, better attention skills as well as longer work cycles. This development is critical to a child’s success as they continue on with their schooling. This class will provide a solid foundation for the children to grow, learn and aspire while making learning fun.
We follow Dr. Maria Montessori’s philosophy of working according to the child’s pace. In the Green Class children work according to their maturity and skill level. Advanced preschoolers and Kindergarten children work at their own pace in small groups. Each child is challenged to aspire and grow to his/her highest potential.
We have also have a Kindergarten program for qualified students. This program combines the best of Montessori teaching methods and the public school curriculum. Montessori teaching methods were developed to take your child up to to ages 12-14 (Middle School Level) with advanced methodologies that your child can benefit from.
