About Herpes Treatment

Herpes: Any of several viral diseases causing the eruption of small blisterlike vesicles on the skin or mucous membranes, especially herpes simplex or herpes zoster.

The herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a virus that manifests itself in two common viral infections, each marked by painful, watery blisters in the skin or mucous membranes (such as the mouth or lips) or on the genitals. The disease is contagious, particularly during an outbreak.

There are more than seven types of herpes viruses, but the two most common are herpes simplex type I (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2). HSV-1 (often called oral-facial herpes) is transmitted through kissing or sharing drinking utensils, and HSV-2 (often called genital herpes) through sexual contact. Both HSV-1 and HSV-2 can cause infections around the face, mouth, and genitals. HSV infections are very common worldwide. In fact, oral herpes is estimated to be present in 50 to 80 percent of the adult population of the United States; and an estimated 20 percent, or over 50 million people, are infected with genital herpes.

Causes of herpes
