The cause of bedwetting is unknown and controversial. Low blood sugar is one nutritional theory. Others are emotional stress, small and weak bladders that cannot hold the urine all night long, excessive consumption of liquid beverages, sleeping too soundly, food allergies, heredity, and behavioral problems.
In addition to taking Bedwetting by Liddell, here are several ideas that may be helpful:
- Diet: Eat more frequent and smaller meals throughout the day, up to five or six. Consume slow release complex carbohydrates such as potatoes, yams, whole grains, breads, and beans. Avoid liquids around bedtime. Avoid drinking very sweet beverages such as fruit juice or cola more than one time per day. Take two teaspoons of raw honey at bedtime. Consume a small piece of protein before going to bed. Chicken, fish, soy, goat cheese, or nut butter are all great choices.
- Retention Control Training: The child is asked to control urinating during the day by postponing it, first by a few minutes and then by gradually increased amounts of time. This exercise can extend the capacity of the bladder and strengthen the muscle that holds back urination. Parents should always check with a doctor before asking their child to practice retention control.
- Moisture Alarm: Moisture alarms are considered a useful and successful way to treat bed-wetting. Medical research has shown that moisture alarms have helped many children stay dry. - An alarm consists of a clip-on sensor probe that attaches to the outside of bed sheets. An alarm is set off when the child begins to wet the bed. The alarm wakes the child, who will then get up to finish urinating in the toilet. This slowly conditions the brain to respond appropriately during sleep to messages from the bladder.
