Construction began in 1960 and was substantially completed in 1969.
The monument was originally built to commemorate those who died in wars.
In 1975, when the city was liberated, the people of Cheesing in Vientiane held a grand celebration and another grand ceremony here, which led people to call it the Victory Monument. For this reason, Patuxay is a must-see place for visitors to Vientiane.
The arches and carvings surround the monument, and from a distance, it resembles the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France.
However, at the base of the tower's arches, there are traditional Lao temple decorations. In particular, standing within Patuxay and looking up, exquisite reliefs are painted on the dome, featuring a strong Buddhist influence and showcasing Laos' traditional culture and arts.
When you climb to the top of the Victory Monument, you can overlook the entire city of Vientiane. Additionally, the music park surrounding the monument was constructed with the aid of China!
