I have always longed to ride an ATV off-road vehicle in the vast desert of Central California. After reopening, it was finally arranged, and it was so much fun! The beautiful, endless desert, driving a cool off-road vehicle and sprinting on it, is even more exciting than riding a roller coaster. It was truly a unique experience!
📍Oceano Dunes SVRA is the desert location, about 3 hours from the Bay Area. Even if you don't want to ride an ATV, you can drive directly to this place and take pictures of the desert. If you only go to play ATV, round trip in a day would be no problem. Of course, there are many fun things to do in the nearby San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, and Pismo Beach, making a weekend getaway quite suitable!
🏎Steve's ATV Rentals is the place where we rented ATVs. You can book in advance on their official website, and walk-ins are usually possible on non-holidays. We chose a two-person ATV for $200 for two hours, or $150 for one hour. They also have many other vehicles, single ATVs, multi-person UTVs, and special ATVs for children. We suggest wearing closed-toe shoes and long sleeves because it can be windy and cold at the beach.
🏎Some ATVs do not require a driver's license, so even friends without a license can enjoy the experience!
🏎After renting the ATV at the store, you will need to pick it up at the desert location on the beach. The company provides a shuttle service, or you can drive there yourself. Driving into the area costs a $5 admission fee, and the entire route is on sandy terrain, which can be challenging to drive on. At the pick-up point, you will watch a safety video and receive a helmet. The staff will provide a map, and then you can start your thrilling ride!
🏎The entire ATV route is along the ocean, so the scenery is stunning. The straight line distance is about 10 miles, but you can ride into the sand dunes on the side. The further you go, the larger the dunes become.
🏎When you first start riding the ATV, it may feel unstable and slow. As you get used to it, you'll likely go faster and tackle sand slopes more confidently. If you go very fast over sand dunes, you may experience a breathtaking moment of flying in the air like in the main picture, though the rental company strictly prohibits it. We saw many people doing it, but we do not recommend taking such risks. It's just an example of how exhilarating it can be!
📷You can stop along the way to admire the spectacular sand dunes. After all, the huge sand dunes inside are scenery only accessible by riding an ATV!
In summary, after playing for two hours, we still wanted more. It was indeed a unique experience, and we highly recommend everyone to try it out, regardless of whether you enjoy thrilling adventures or leisurely strolling on the sand, it's a great activity to do!
