🏢📍The Getty Museum was initially built in 1954 in the home of J. Paul Getty in Pacific Palisades. He expanded his own building into a museum wing. In the 1970s, for more space to accommodate the growing collection, Getty built an Italian-style villa on his property, which opened to the public in 1974. The museum is perched atop a small hill, connected to a visitor parking lot at the base of the hill by a tram system that shuttles between the two locations.
🖼 The museum features European paintings, drawings, manuscripts, sculpture, and decorative arts from before the 20th century, as well as photographs from the 1830s to the present from around the world. Additionally, the central collection at the museum includes outdoor sculptures displayed on terraces and gardens and a large central garden designed by landscape architect Robert Irwin. Exhibited artworks include Van Gogh's "Irises."
