🔥Hualien's night market really has a myriad of delicious eats. Hualien isn't big, you could walk anywhere, but if it's too much hassle, you can rent an electric bike. I rented one for half a day for 500 Taiwanese dollars, travelled 80 kilometers in 6 hours, and the cost of renting for the whole day, if I remember correctly, was either 800 or 900 Taiwanese dollars.
🎤 The Dongdamen Night Market forms a T shape, it is very spacious and there are indigenous people singing along the way in – it's quite atmospheric!
✅ Ye Xiang Flat Noodles
The shop is large and busy. When I arrived, it took about 6-7 minutes for my food to be ready after I ordered. The soup's flavor is on the lighter side, and you need to add your own seasonings. Many Taiwanese shops use black vinegar, which is a bit sweet. I don't really like it, it's not sour enough, so I usually add black pepper. The meat inside is quite substantial, and a bowl is roughly 16-17 RMB (Renminbi).
✅ Hualien Steel Pipe Red Tea
There are two famous red tea shops in Hualien: MiaoKou Red Tea and Steel Pipe Red Tea. I didn't visit MiaoKou, but I heard that the flavor of Steel Pipe Red Tea is better. When I visited on the first day, the owner was an old man with a somewhat authoritative aura, so no one dared to breathe heavily around him. I didn't see him make the tea from the steel pipe because it was already prepared and stored in the fridge. The red tea costs 40 Taiwanese dollars and was sweet and pretty good, good for cutting greasiness. The soy milk was also 40 Taiwanese dollars, also sweet, and decent. The star fruit juice was 45 Taiwanese dollars, sweet and sour? If you drink too much, it's a little hard to accept, so to me it was just so-so.
✅ Qinzhou Steamed Dumplings
Delicious, with the accompanying sauce, very fragrant. The dumpling skin wraps the meat tightly, giving a very satisfying mouthful. I think it tastes better than the steamed dumplings from Gōngzhèng Baozi next door.
✅ Qing Gongzheng Baozi, 5 Taiwanese dollars each
These cost just over 1 RMB each, and the skin is very hearty! Very filling, it was alright, nothing particularly stunning.
✅ Lai Lai Salt and Pepper Chicken & Lai Lai BBQ
Salt and pepper chicken is actually the same as crispy fried chicken, just with a different name. The crispy fried chicken from this place was quite good. The sweet-but-not-spicy flavor was just OK, average, I'd say. My boyfriend explained to me that "sweet but not spicy" is actually the transliteration of the Japanese tempura, and in Japan, all such fried foods are collectively known as tempura. As for the BBQ, it tasted quite salty, so just OK.
✅ Filled Glutinous Rice Balls from Huangbao!
Delicious! One bite is super satisfying, I highly recommend it. The price is shown in the picture!
✅ Stinky French Fries!
I also love these! They're really good, they're just stinky tofu shaped into fries🍟
