✨ The Chinese enclave in Los Angeles, distinguished from Chinatown, captivated me during a delightful expedition led by my friend last Saturday. Nestled in Monterey Park, this locale exudes a traditional charm as a Chinese town, boasting revered establishments like Dahua Supermarket, Peninsula Seafood, San Wo Roast Meat, Dongting Spring Restaurant, a Japanese discount store, milk tea shops, tea houses, optical stores, and purveyors of dried goods. For more than three decades, it has magnetized the Chinese community, beckoning them for leisurely pursuits, entertainment, and retail therapy. In comparison to Phoenix's Chinatown, this unified square boasts a more expansive expanse, encompassing 99 Dahua and an array of service organizations and dining establishments catering to the discerning Chinese populace.
⛅️ The crux lies in the significant Chinese population inhabiting this unified square, much akin to New York's resplendent Flushing, is it not? While Chinatown in Los Angeles languishes in desolation, largely patronized by elderly Fuzhou immigrants, Flushing and Monterey Park emerge as sanctuaries for fresh arrivals.
⛅️ Initially, I mistook this locale for Los Angeles' Chinatown, yet my astute friend enlightened me to its antiquity and current desertion. The young gravitate towards this vibrant enclave instead.
⛅️ With no specific shopping agenda, we meandered through a captivating dried goods emporium, procuring exquisite chopsticks and nylon shopping bags from the Japanese store. Our visit to 99 Dahua yielded a basket brimming with Chinese delicacies and groceries. To culminate our excursion, my friend treated me to Wuxi Xiaolongbao, skillfully avoiding the bustling rush hour. Only after 8 o'clock did we embark on our homeward journey. As per my phone's navigation, a mere 41-minute ride separates us from our suburban abode, rendering this unified square not too distant after all.
