The Getty Center is one of the most popular museums in Los Angeles, situated on a hillside in the northwest side of the city. It was built with a $1.3 billion grant from the Getty Foundation and opened to the public for free in 1997.
💥Take a tram from the parking lot up to the museum, overlooking the bustling 405 freeway and the famous UCLA along the way. The design of the museum is modern and minimalist, the exterior featuring 16,000 blocks of white travertine stone from Italy.
🏢The museum is divided into four exhibition halls and a garden. The entrance starts from the North Pavilion, followed by the East, South, and West Pavilions. As you progress, the artwork displayed gets more recent. Authentic works of oil painting masters from the 14th to the 19th century; Byzantine period scroll manuscripts; costumes from the Louis XIV to Napoleon era; sculptures, utensils from the Renaissance period to the end of the 19th century, all exhibits reflect the art styles and cultural changes of the times.
🖼The West Pavilion houses works by Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masters, including the centerpiece of the collection, Van Gogh’s “Irises.” This painting, completed in the last year of Van Gogh’s life, sold for $53.9 million in 1988, making it the highest-priced painting at the time.
🖼Because of my fascination with Van Gogh and Monet, I've lost count of how many times I've visited. A great work of art is certainly seen today through countless annotations made by predecessors. In the museum, we can look directly at the work to feel the brush strokes, and even feel the artist’s strength and intent through the paper and paint.
📌To appreciate art, you do not need to understand it; to enjoy, you do not need a reason. That instantaneous attraction is the resonance of beauty!
📌At the tram entrance, there are rows of wheelchairs provided for visitors who need them.
📌The service desk provides guidebooks in various languages; free audio guides are available for several hours each day; there are tactile models with braille for visually impaired visitors.
📌Different areas of the museum are equipped with sunshades for both sun and rain protection.
There are dining areas and cafes, to provide meals for visitors. Admission is free, but online reservations are required on weekends.
