Mission

At Pine Tree Montessori School, we pledge to conduct ourselves professionally and personally in ways that will reflect our respect for each other and for the children we serve. We will do whatever is within our talents and capacity to protect the rights of each child to have the freedom and opportunity to develop his or her full potential.

Pine Tree Montessori School admits children without regard to race, color, religious or national origin.

Philosophy

The philosophy of Pine Tree Montessori School is based on the traditional Montessori program, which was designed to help young children to develop themselves into independent individuals. We believe that children from a very young age are ready and capable of learning vast amounts of knowledge. Each classroom is a prepared environment and is equipped with Montessori materials appropriate for ages two through kindergarten. The materials are classified into several different categories: Practical Life (daily living), Sensorial exercises, Language, Geography and Math. Through the use of these materials we hope the children will gain an independence and knowledge which will give them a foundation for success in all their school years.

Conferences

Parent conferences give each parent and teacher an opportunity to understand and partner together for the best interest of the child. Pine Tree Montessori School believes that by working together we help each child succeed. Parent conferences are held two times during the school year: September/ October and March/ April

The Montessori Classroom

The prepared environment is designed by an adult in advance of the child’s entrance. Its aim is to render the growing child independent of the adult. This environment is a place where the child begins to direct his or her own life and in so doing, becomes conscious of his or her own powers.

The apparatus in the classroom can be divided into three areas: practical life, sensorial exercises and learning materials. Practical life activities such as washing tables, dusting, polishing shoes and silver, folding clothes, buttoning and zippering promote mastery of the child’s self and his or her environment. The sensorial materials are designed to provide the child with concepts of dimension, color, shape, sound, etc. By the paring of similar objects and the recognition of contrasts, discrimination becomes evident. Examples of sensorial apparatus are sets of cylinders that vary in height and diameter, sandpaper boards that contrast roughness and smoothness, colored tablets that match colors and others that vary in degrees of tint, and wood tablets that differ in weight.

Sensorial education can be defined as trying to educate the senses, not trying to make the child see better, but to help him know what he sees. By giving first strongly contrasted sensation, and then various graded series (i.e., first red and blue, then several shades of blue), we are teaching him what is red and what is blue, and at the same time, he is learning to compare, contrast, and discriminate. The child learns to distinguish different sense impressions and to put them in some sort of order. This is the beginning of conscious knowledge of the environment as opposed to the unconscious knowledge he has already. As the child begins to isolate these qualities mentally, he is gradually building up concepts of abstractions.

The third category can be defined as learning apparatus, which can be further categorized into math, language and science/ botany. Some examples are the movable alphabet, red and blue counting rods, decimal materials, puzzle maps and biological forms.

Dr. Montessori designed her prepared environment for children of 2 1/2 years to 6 years. The child’s main purpose at this stage is “to conduct himself.” Because he is left free to accomplish the task, he is able to develop to his full potential in the prepared environment.

Our Programs

Kindergarten Readiness Skills

Social Skills: By having your child attend our school, they will be able to interact with other children their age. We help teach your child to express their feelings in a way that isn't aggressive or involve crying. With a consistent learning environment, children will learn how to interact with others. your child will be prepared for the step into their first grade career.

Following Directions & Paying Attention: There are a variety of activities we do on a daily basis that will help children learn how to follow directions. For example, playing the classic "Simon Says" game shows how to follow directions and pay attention to the changes in the words.

Sounding out Letters: We present items in class that begin with the same sound and have them identify the letter that makes that sound. We teach your child that letters represent sounds and that each one makes a different sound. Overemphasize the first sound in words to help your child hear the difference. We have a large set of letters that children can play with while we sound out the letter. This allows your child to make learning fun as they move letters around to make simple words. We have games and song rhymes to make learning letters and fun and engaging.

Writing: After learning each letter, we have your child practice writing the alphabet and pick out the letters that spell their name. We teach them how to write their name and the difference between uppercase and lowercase letters. Use play dough and have them create different letters with it. This will not only help make reading and writing fun, but also improve their motor skills.

Shapes and Colors: Kids love colors. At Pine Tree Montessori, we help them learn different colors by playing games in which your child finds objects of particular colors and shapes around the classroom. We teach difficult shapes such as pentagons and diamonds by showing them how to draw them on paper and then cutting them out.

Cutting: Learning to use scissors is a big step in Kindergarten. To begin teaching your child to cut, we allow them to rip or tear little pieces and strips of paper. We use child-safe scissors and let your child practice cutting/snipping along a straight line drawn on a piece of paper and progressing to cutting out different shapes.

Number Recognition and Counting: Similar to letters, we present cards with numbers on them to help children to see and practice saying the number out loud. We make counting part of everything. Having children practice counting out pencils, crayons and small items each day helps them begin the habit of counting items.

Reading Readiness: We have reading time each day. As we read to your child, we run a finger under the words as we move through the sentence. This will teach them that words move left to right and top to bottom. Clapping out syllables of words (example; Pu-ppy has two syllables, A-man-da has three syllables)

The Kindergarten program is designed to give working parents the full value of a Montessori Education. Children may spend a maximum of 9 hours a day. Children that arrive during morning daycare will be served breakfast before 9:00 am and children staying for afternoon daycare will be served a snack. Before and after Montessori classes, the children spend time in a non-academic setting that provides opportunities for free play, fantasy play, role play, large muscle activities and structured art.

This is a balanced program which offers children an opportunity for intellectual growth and social interaction, combined with a vast amount of warmth and affection from a trained staff.

Full Year Programs

We currently have three classes in session during the morning hours. In all classes, emphasis will be given to ground rules of a Montessori class. Lessons of grace and courtesy will also be given. The Montessori Philosophy believes that children learn from each other. That is why we have mixed age groups in all the classes. All children receive Art, Music, Dance, Language (Spanish & Chinese) and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) as part of the curriculum.

Early Learners is for children ages 2.0 to 3.0. This Montessori class is for children who are toilet trained. The teachers will help and encourage those children who are not totally trained, but who are progressing well with this stage of learning, however, space for these children is limited and at an extra charge. Encouragement to help promote good bathroom habits is stressed. Children who stay all day will nap after having lunch together. Social skills and focus on academics using the Montessori materials are taught. This class can be part time (9:00 – 12:00 or 12:30 – 3:00), or full time (9:00 – 3:00). Children who stay all day have a second session of Montessori after lunch and recess. The Day Care program is from 6:30 to 9:00, 3:00 to 6:00.

Bright Start is for children ages 3.0 to 4.0. These children must be toilet trained and will also have an afternoon nap. Social skills and focus on academics using a full set of Montessori materials are stressed. This class can be part time (9:00 – 12:00 or 12:30 – 3:00), or full time (9:00 – 3:00). Children who stay all day have a second session of Montessori after lunch and recess. The Day Care program is from 6:30 to 9:00, 3:00 to 6:00.

Young Minds is for children ages 4.0 to 6.0. These children must be toilet trained and are not required to have an afternoon nap. Kindergarten readiness, continued social skills and focus on academics using all of the Montessori materials are stressed. This class can be part time (9:00 – 12:00 or 12:30 – 3:00), or full time (9:00 – 3:00). Children who stay all day have a second session of Montessori after lunch and recess. The Day Care program is from 6:30 to 9:00, 3:00 to 6:00.
